We, the American Indians, are going through a great deal that just proves how unequal to everyone else we are. Our people suffer the highest unemployment rates of any racial group, and thus we are the poorest. Many of our people have tuberculosis and alcoholism; so of course, we also have the highest death rates. Eisenhower has moved us to the cities, but conditions have not improved, and we are still poor. Fortunately we have drafted the declaration of Indian purpose, so we “choose our own way of life”. It creates economic opportunities for us on our reservation. This helped President Johnson create the national council on Indian opportunity. That is another good thing for us because it ensures that programs focus on our needs and desires. However, there is still a lot of work to be done for us American Indians. We want a greater opportunity to control and govern our own lives. We want control and free determination to “choose our own way of life.” And last, we want equal economic opportunities on our reservations as anyone else can get. We are American Indians, and we deserve self determination and equality.
