The Organizations

We, the Hispanic Americans, created many great organizations that supported our causes throughout 1960s, which helped us make others to pay attentions toward us. One of the first organizations we supported was called, The United Farm Workers of America as known as UFWA. This organization is a labor union created from the merging of two groups and National Farm Workers Association (NFWA) led by César Chávez. This union changed from a workers' rights organization that helped workers get unemployment insurance. The NFWA recognized their common goals and methods, and realized the strengths of coalition formation, jointly formed the United Farm Workers Organizing Committee. The next organization that helped us during 1960s was called The Brown Berets. The Brown Berets are a racially charged Chicano Nationalist, political extremist and Mexican Americans group The Brown Berets focus on community organizing against police brutality and advocate for educational equality. Also, Mexican American Political Association (MAPA) is an organization that helped us to gather more attentions toward us. This is the organization that promotes the interests of Mexican Americans, Mexicans, Latinos, Chicanos, Hispanics and Latino Economic Refugees in the United States. MAPA was organized by 150 volunteer delegates at Fresno. Edward R. Roybal later elected to the United States House of Representatives served as its first chair/president. Throughout the 1960s, MAPA was active in the Civil Rights Movement and the Chicano Political Movement MAPA members also aided Cesar and the United Farm Workers in political and labor negotiations. During the 1970s, MAPA saw more successful campaigns by Mexican American candidates. We supported these three great organizations to help us and other Hispanic- Americans, to gather more attentions towardus through movements of the 1960s.
