The National Organization for Women
We founded The National Organization for Women (NOW) in 1966 and which has a membership of 550,000 contributing members set up for the advancement of women. NOW was founded on June 30, 1966, in Washington D.C., by 28 women and men attending the Third National Conference of State Commissions on the Status of Women, the successor to the PresidentalCommission on the Status of Women. The main founder is Betty Friedan who is our president. Also Shirley Chisholm, who is the first Black woman to run for president of the United States of America. Betty Friedan and Pauli Murray wrote the organization's Statement of Purpose in 1966. The statement describes the purpose of NOW as "To take action to bring women into full participation in the mainstream of American society now, exercising all privileges and responsibilities thereof in truly equal partnership with men." NOW has six main goals: abortion rights/reproductive issues, violence against women, constitutional equality, promoting diversity/ending racism, lesbian rights, and economic justice.

The National Women’s Political Caucus
The National Women's Political Caucus (NWPC) is a national multi-partisan grassroots organization in the United States dedicated to recruiting, training, and supporting women who seek elected and appointed offices. NWPC was founded in 1971 by Gloria Steinem. We established three main issues: reproductive freedom, affordable childcare, and passage of the Equal Rights Amendment. The National Women’s Political Caucus organizes campaign workshops across the country to teach the nuts and bolts of running a successful candidacy at all levels of government.
